How to flash a Samsung phone - smartphone firmware. How to flash Android Samsung using Odin Which windows can you flash Samsung with?

  • 06.03.2023

One of the popular areas of Samsung is the production of smartphones and tablets. In a short time, the company has gained great popularity among users thanks to its reliable phones.
Most of Samsung smartphones are released on Android. But any device is not insured against breakdowns, including those caused by the user. Editing system files, installing applications from untrusted devices and low-quality software lead to malfunctions.
Unfortunately, in most cases there is only one way out - to reflash your device.
How to flash a Samsung phone using KIES
KIES is a specially developed utility from Samsung designed to synchronize data with a PC, as well as update and restore the OS on the gadget.
What you will need to flash the firmware for your Samsung device:
The gadget itself
Computer, or better yet, a laptop
USB cable
KIES program
Fully charged battery
What not to do during flashing
You cannot turn off the device and PC. According to the universal law, villains can turn off the lights during an update, so if possible, use a laptop.
Use the device. Receive calls, SMS, go online. You can’t even just look for a minute. Ideally, find a SIM card that one hundred percent no one will call or write to.
Pull out the battery and unplug the USB. Therefore, place the device so as not to accidentally touch the cord.
If you do all the steps described above, it is not a fact that after this your Samsung will be restored even at a service center, so be careful.
Download KIES to your computer and install it. Next, connect the device to the PC using a USB cable.
If the utility does not start automatically, then double-click on its icon.
In the presence of new version software, the software will notify you about the need to update. If the dialog box does not appear, click on the tab with the connected device and click on “Software Update”.
We agree to download new software. We wait a few minutes.

Important. In progress Samsung updates may reboot several times. Do not unplug it or unplug the cord from the USB port. The device turned off not because the contact was lost, but because it was updating.
When a message about the successful completion of the process appears on the monitor, you can now turn off USB cable.
When the device boots up and a message about successful firmware is displayed on the PC display, you can disconnect the USB cable. We restore data from a backup copy, or from Google account, and you can use your smartphone.
Flashing Samsung phone using Odin program
For this you will need:
Smartphone
USB cable
Odin program
Fully charged battery
PC or laptop
With this method of updating the software, it is prohibited to do the same actions as described in the previous option.
With single-file firmware, all data will be saved.
The device must be turned off! We connect the switched off gadget to the computer and open Odin.
Make sure the Samsung is connected, the top left corner of the window will light yellow. And in the Message window it says “added”.
Next, click on the PDA button and select the pre-downloaded archive of the new software. Its extension should be .md5, .tar or smd.
Now you need to turn the device into firmware mode. To do this, press the power key, volume key and home key at the same time. Hold it until the splash screen appears.
Now in the Odin utility, click start. We wait about five minutes, the device reboots, and only after it has fully loaded do we disconnect the USB cable.
Five-file firmware
Turn off the phone, connect it to the PC, launch Odin, make sure that the device is connected.
Unpack the firmware archive into a separate folder and sequentially add files to the windows:
PIT window – file with extension .pit
PDA – a file whose name contains the words PDA or CODE
PHONE - contains MODEM in the name
CSC – contains the word CSC
BOOTLOADER – contains APBOOT in the name
Check the Re-partition box, click on start and wait for the PASS message. After Samsung reboot.
Flashing a Samsung phone without a computer
To do this, you will need a firmware archive, which can be downloaded on the Internet on a website or forum that specializes in Samsung.
After downloading, write to a flash drive or internal memory and turn off the gadget.
Next, depending on the model, simultaneously press the volume or volume down key and the power key.
When the screensaver appears, release the keys. Using the volume buttons, scroll to the “Install updates” section. Briefly press the power button and select the desired file from the list that appears. Again, briefly press power and confirm your consent.
The second option for flashing without a computer is through the Odin Mobile program
Download any single-file firmware and write it to the internal memory. The format must be .tar or .tar.md5
If there is no Mobile Odin, then download and install it. Then open it and select Open file.
In the window that appears, select the one you need and click OK.
Check and click on Flash firmware. After this, we wait about ten minutes.
During the process, a message may appear indicating that a reboot is required. Don't be scared, just press the center key of your smartphone.

Despite the high level of reliability of Android devices produced by one of the leaders in the world market of smartphones and tablet computers - Samsung - users are often puzzled by the possibility or need to flash the device. For Android devices manufactured by Samsung, the best solution for manipulating and restoring software is the Odin program.

It doesn’t matter for what purpose the procedure for flashing a Samsung Android device is carried out. Having resorted to using the powerful and functional Odin software, it turns out that working with a smartphone or tablet is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Let's take a step-by-step look at the installation procedure for various types of firmware and their components.

Important! The Odin application can damage the device if the user performs incorrect actions! The user performs all actions in the program at his own peril and risk. The site administration and the author of the article are not responsible for possible negative consequences of following the instructions below!

To ensure interaction between Odin and the device, you will need to install drivers. Fortunately, Samsung has taken care of its users and the installation process usually does not cause any problems. The only inconvenience is the fact that the drivers are included with Samsung proprietary software for servicing mobile devices - Kies (for older models) or Smart Switch (for new models). It should be noted that when flashing firmware via Odin with Kies simultaneously installed on the system, various failures and critical errors may occur. Therefore, after installing the Kies drivers, you must remove them.

Step 2: Put your device into download mode

The Odin program is able to interact with a Samsung device only if the latter is in a special Download mode.

Step 3: Firmware

Using the Odin program, you can install single- and multi-file firmware (service), as well as individual software components.

Installing single-file firmware

  1. Download the ODIN program and firmware. Unpack everything into a separate folder on drive C.
  2. Necessarily! If installed, delete Samsung Kies! We follow the path: "Control Panel""Programs and Features""Delete".

  3. Launch Odin as Administrator. The program does not require installation, so to launch it you need to right-click on the file Odin3.exe in the folder containing the application. Then select the item from the drop-down menu "Run as Administrator".
  4. We charge the device’s battery to at least 60% and switch it to "Download" and connect to the USB port located on the back panel of the PC, i.e. directly to the motherboard. When connected, Odin should identify the device, as evidenced by the field being filled in blue "ID:COM", displaying the port number in the same field, as well as the inscription "Added!!" in the log field (tab "Log").
  5. To add a single-file firmware image to Odin, click the button "AP"(in versions One up to 3.09 – button "PDA")
  6. We indicate to the program the path to the file.
  7. After pressing the button "Open" in the Explorer window, Odin will begin reconciling the MD5 amount of the proposed file. Upon completion of the hash check, the name of the image file is displayed in the field "AP (PDA)". Go to the tab "Options".
  8. When using single-file firmware in the tab "Options" All checkboxes must be unchecked except "F. Reset Time" And "Auto Reboot".
  9. Having determined the necessary parameters, press the button "Start".
  10. The process of writing information to the device memory sections will begin, accompanied by the display of the names of the device memory sections being written in the upper right corner of the window and the completion of the progress bar located above the field "ID:COM". Also in the process, the log field is filled with inscriptions about the ongoing procedures.
  11. Upon completion of the process, the inscription is displayed in a square in the upper left corner of the program on a green background "PASS". This indicates the successful completion of the firmware. You can disconnect the device from the computer's USB port and start it by long pressing the power button. When installing a single-file firmware, user data, unless explicitly specified in the Odin settings, is in most cases not affected.

Installing multi-file (service) firmware

When restoring a Samsung device after serious failures, installing modified software, and in some other cases, the so-called multi-file firmware will be required. In reality, this is a service solution, but the described method is widely used by ordinary users.

Multi-file firmware is called because it is a collection of several image files, and, in some cases, a PIT file.

Firmware with PIT file

The PIT file and its addition to ODIN are tools used to re-partition the device's memory into sections. This method of carrying out the device recovery process can be used in conjunction with both single-file and multi-file firmware.

Using a PIT file when flashing is permissible only in extreme cases, for example, if there are serious problems with the performance of the device.

Installation of individual software components

In addition to installing the entire firmware, Odin makes it possible to write individual components of the software platform to the device - the kernel, modem, recovery, etc.

For example, let's look at installing custom TWRP recovery via ODIN.

It should be noted that the above methods for working with Odin are applicable to most Samsung devices. At the same time, they cannot claim to be absolutely universal instructions due to the presence of a wide variety of firmware, a large range of devices, and slight differences in the list of options used in specific cases of application.

How to flash Samsung yourself to improve its performance? Many users deliberately “mess with” the phone’s settings immediately after purchasing it in order to update the software version or, conversely, to get rid of unnecessary pre-installed programs.

So, when is flashing Android really necessary? It would be advisable to delve into your hardware if necessary:

  • install on outdated Samsung latest version platforms;
  • get rid of branded services that are completely unnecessary and significantly slow down the system;
  • remove system unnecessary software installed by the manufacturer;
  • get new settings and features.

In addition to the above reasons, sophisticated users require firmware to improve security and privacy. Many people don’t like Google’s “all-seeing eye,” so they disable services using changes made to Samsung.

Preliminary preparation before flashing smartphone firmware

Samsung firmware is a serious operation that requires thorough preliminary preparation. If you don't take into account important nuances, the procedure will end in complete failure. Before installing the firmware you need:

  • Charge your smartphone completely or up to 80%;
  • original (!) USB cable for Samsung;
  • reliable network signal without traffic restrictions.

And the main thing you should stock up on before flashing your Samsung phone is unlimited patience. Get ready for possible problems, analysis of what happened and repetition of the algorithm.

How to flash a Samsung phone

Samsung is flashed with both official Samsung tools and third party utilities. Users buy legal software from the manufacturer’s website, and it is used to easily update the OS to a new version.

Via computer

Let's look at how to update Android via a computer:

  1. Go to samsung.com.
  2. We are looking for the Smart Switch program.
  3. Download Smart Switch software to your computer.
  4. We connect the Samsung to the PC via a USB cable and wait for the computer to find the device.
  5. When Smart Switch is launched, it will automatically find OS versions available for updating and offer to install them on your smartphone.
  6. Click “Update” and wait for the new OS version to be installed successfully.

Without a computer

If you don’t have a PC at hand or you don’t risk flashing Samsung using a Chinese wire, you can use another method. You can easily update the OS from the smartphone itself; the main thing is to have access to Wi-Fi without traffic restrictions.

  1. Go to Samsung settings.
  2. We are looking for the “About device” item.
  3. Go to the “Software Update” tab.
  4. If the “Update” button is active, tap on it.
  5. We agree to the download, and after it is completed, we initiate the installation of the update.

You cannot use your phone during the update process, so be patient and wait for the process to complete.

What to do after flashing

After flashing, the official developer recommends initiating a data reset on the device. This measure is necessary to avoid possible malfunctions in the updated OS, which may conflict with existing applications associated with the previous version of Android.

Before resetting to factory settings, save all important files and components: transfer photos and videos to your PC, and save chat data and passwords in Google.

Multi-file firmware

For sophisticated users, a simple OS update is not enough: they want to remove unnecessary system services from their smartphone and add new functionality to their device. For this purpose, the method of multi-file firmware is used, the algorithm of which we will consider using the Odin program as an example. Before starting, you need to consider important nuances:

  • If you use illegal tools, you will lose your warranty completely;
  • All operations are performed by users at their own risk.

The list of preparatory manipulations before flashing a Samsung via odin includes saving important data, ensuring the network and sufficient battery charge on the smartphone, as well as setting up services. In general, the process follows a simple algorithm:

It is worth noting that the smartphone key combination does not always bring up the firmware menu. Some Samsung devices do not respond to these actions, so if there is no success, it is recommended to look in the instructions for the device or on special forms for information about the correct way to go to the desired window.

The complexity of multi-file firmware lies in the need for the correct location of files in the fields:

This is all that needs to be done for successful firmware; there is no need to tick any additional boxes. Click the start button and wait for the installation to complete. Upon successful completion it will be active button Reset, click on it and wait for the smartphone to reboot.

After the phone has successfully rebooted, you can disconnect the cord. Now the smartphone is completely ready to work in an updated form. Sometimes a reboot makes it impossible to turn on the device, in which case the only way out is to reset using a special button in the case.

Conclusion

Flashing a phone is a useful measure in some cases, but requires great care and diligence. You can use official sources to update the OS, as well as special utilities that adjust Samsung components to suit the user's tastes. They remove system services that, in fact, are not needed and seriously slow down the operation of the device, and also add new features to the functionality of the smartphone.

But there is also the underwater part of the iceberg: unsuccessfully carried out firmware can turn an expensive smartphone into a useless brick, and insufficiently tested “folk” utilities will cause system errors. Some users noted that the installed ROM consumed the battery in a matter of hours, and some firmware interacted poorly with the hardware, which manifested itself in the form of dead modules, deterioration in camera performance, and slower search for satellites. Sometimes the possible consequences are much more dangerous than insufficient system performance or the fear of being targeted by Google. So think a hundred times before you decide to delve into the hardware of your smartphone without enough experience and knowledge.

How to flash a Samsung phone?

To flash the firmware Samsung phone, it is not necessary to contact service center. You can do this work yourself using special software. But it is important to do this process correctly.

Let's take a closer look at how to flash a Samsung phone with your own hands.

Preparing for firmware

Before you start independent firmware phone, you must fully charge its battery. After all, if during such a process the phone turns off, then serious problems with its functioning cannot be avoided.

The next thing to do is connect the device to your computer via a USB cable. The PC operating system may offer to install additional drivers for the phone to function correctly. It is recommended to do this, and then restart the computer and disconnect the mobile device.

Samsung phone firmware

Now let's move on to the firmware of the Samsung phone itself. It is performed as follows:

  1. Launch the MultiLoader program on your mobile device (at this time the phone should not be connected via USB to the PC).
  2. Go to its main menu. In it you will need to find the BACK UP option and activate it. This will allow you to back up your data in case problems arise during the firmware.
  3. Go to the main menu, select “Firmware” and then BRCM2133.

  10. In case the menu mobile device will be in English, you will need to reconfigure. The following command will help you do this: *#6984125*#. Next, in the menu that opens, select the Pre-configuration item and specify this password: “*#73561*#. After which the device reboots and this configuration is entered into it: “*2767*3855#. This will complete the firmware. All you have to do is check the functionality of the device.

If you are not sure that you can correctly flash the firmware for a Samsung phone, then it is better to entrust it to specialists. But contact only experienced craftsmen who will provide you with a guarantee for the work performed.

Many modern users are scared by the concept of “flashing” if it is mentioned in the context of mobile phones, so it would be useful to figure out how to flash an Android phone. Most often, this is needed in case the phone does not turn on or has started to glitch very badly. Although some are simply not satisfied with their firmware due to design or other similar issues.

In any case, we will consider the simplest method that even the most inexperienced users can perform. This method is suitable for all smartphone models from Samsung, HTC, FLY and other modern manufacturers.

At the same time, the entire process will be described so that everyone can complete all its stages at home, without involving specialists.

What do we need

Besides the mobile phone, this method involves the presence of a program called ROM Manager. The best way to download it is at Google Play.

The developer of this application is a team under the unusual name ClockworkMod. This team has long enjoyed enormous popularity and authority among users from various countries.

Their creation allows you to easily change firmware, as well as perform a huge number of system manipulations.

The main ones are:

  • Backup;
  • System Restore;
  • Installation of new firmware (what we need) and much more.

The main advantage of using the ROM Manager program to flash any phone, be it Samsung, HTC, FLY or any other, is the ability to roll back all changes.

This means that if any problems arise during installation or after it (for example, if the phone does not turn on), or you simply don’t like the new firmware for some reason, everything can be returned back.

Among other benefits of using ROM Manager, the following are especially important:

  • It is not difficult and everything can be done at home;
  • All operations are performed quite quickly;
  • You don’t need to do anything through the computer, everything happens through the phone (except that you will need to transfer the firmware to the phone via the computer, although there are other methods for this, such as Bluetooth or file sharing services);
  • Reliability - thousands of users have already done a similar procedure.

We will also need the new firmware itself. Many users today do not know where to find it. And the easiest way to do this is through the phone.

In Google you need to enter a query like “firmware for [phone model]”, that is, for example, “firmware for Samsung Galaxy J7". All this is done very simply.

The problem is that there is a huge amount of firmware on the Internet, but many of them, in the language of advanced users, are “broken.”

This means that after installation the computer will not turn on, the user will not be able to install some programs, or other problems of various kinds will arise. Therefore, before downloading this or that firmware, use the following advice.

Advice: Read on the Internet what other users write about the firmware version you are going to download.

Today, the positive opinion of people who have already installed something is the best guarantee of quality. And the manufacturer can write whatever he wants and all of this, of course, will be only good. Another tip will help you choose good firmware.

Advice: Use the ROM Manager Premium program, which will make it difficult to find firmware for your phone model, and will also show which of them are the most popular among other users. Also in the program window you can see discussions of other users regarding this or that firmware version.

In any case, before performing all the actions described below, your phone, or rather, on the memory card (this is important!), must have zip archive with new firmware.

So, let's move on to the firmware process itself.

Stages of flashing an Android phone

The ROM Manager program has already been downloaded and installed on your phone.

Now you need to do the following:

  1. Get root rights. If you don’t know how to do this, the whole process will be described below especially for you.
  2. Open the ROM Manager program and install ClockWorkMod. It is a program that downloads any files.

Yes, Android has its own such program, but we need ClockWorkMod to work.

To do this you need to do the following:

  • At the top of the program window, in the section called “ Recovery Mode» click the “Install ClockWorkMod” button (highlighted in Figure 1.a);
  • After this, click on your device in the drop-down list, appearance which is shown in Figure No. 1.b;

No. 1. The main menu of the ROM Manager program and the phone model selection window

Attention: Before installing ClockWorkMod, the phone must not be connected to the computer. In general, it is better to turn off all its means of communication, except for Wi-Fi, which will make it possible to download the necessary files.

  • We are waiting for the download and installation of ClockWorkMod to finish.

Now you need to backup your system. You will need it in case of incorrect installation new firmware or other problems with it.

To do this you need to do the following:

  1. In the main menu, select the “Save current ROM” command (highlighted in Figure No. 2);
  2. Specify the name of the archive in which the current firmware will be stored, that is, a backup copy of the system in the window;
  3. Click the “OK” button in the same window;
  4. We are waiting for the program to create a backup copy of the system and save it in an archive with a name specified by the user.

No. 2. Creating a backup in ROM Manager

To proceed directly to installing the new firmware, in the ROM Manager program window you need to select the “Install ROM from SD card” item, which is highlighted in Figure 3. After this, you will need to select where the firmware you downloaded earlier is located, that is, the zip archive with it.

No. 3. Button “Install ROM from SD card”

After this, you will be asked to perform some actions along with installing new firmware. This way you can delete all data, erase the cache, and also make a backup copy of the existing system. We have already done the latter earlier, so here you can only select the item related to the cache.

Advice (required!): After all the above steps, connect your phone to the charger. This is very important, because if the phone runs out of power while installing new firmware, it can lead to irreversible consequences.

After this you will have to wait. Depending on the model, this process can take up to two hours, although in most cases it will take no more than 45 minutes. This will complete the flashing process.

The process of obtaining root rights

This process is performed differently on different versions of Android. But in most cases, it all comes down to installing one of the special programs that allow you to literally get these same root rights by pressing one button.

The list of these programs is as follows:

  • Framaroot;
  • UniversalAndRoot;
  • VISIONary+;
  • GingerBreak;
  • z4root;
  • Baidu Root;
  • Romaster SU;
  • Towelroot;
  • Root Dashi;
  • 360 Root.

Now you just need to find one of them on the Internet, most likely on Google Play, install and use it. It's safe to say that you will be able to figure out how to use them.

For example, the Framaroot program window is shown in Figure 4. All you need to do is click on the “Install SuperSU” button.

No. 4. Framaroot program window

System Restore

We said above that if any problems arise with the new firmware, you can roll back all changes and return to old version. This procedure is also done in ROM Manager.

In the main menu of the program, click the “Backups” button (highlighted in Figure No. 5).

After this, the usual dialog for selecting the location of the system image will appear. After selecting the previously created image, you can choose one of three options.

Accordingly, we will need to select the item called “Restore”.

No. 5. Main menu of the ROM Manager program

After a few more tens of minutes, the system may return to the state it was in before installing the new firmware. As you can see, there is absolutely nothing complicated in this procedure.

However, in all the firmware using the ROM Manager program there is also nothing complicated - almost everything is done in one or two clicks.

In the video below you can clearly see how the process of installing another firmware using the ROM Manager program occurs. True, this video is in English, but the meaning of what is happening is easy to understand.
